Mrs. Laura Taylor - May 2026 Educator of the Month

Franklin County Community School Corporation is proud to recognize Mrs. Laura Taylor, 4th Grade Teacher at Brookville Elementary, as our Educator of the Month!
Mrs. Taylor earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Indiana University Bloomington and her Master of Science in Elementary Education from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Laura has dedicated all 33 years of her career in education to FCCSC.
Laura was nominated for this honor by a parent who shared: “Mrs. Taylor is my son’s teacher this year, and from day one she has been phenomenal. She has always been fantastic with communication and is willing to go above and beyond to address any issues or concerns brought to her attention. My son started having some significant emotional struggles over the last month or two, and I can’t put into words how much her patience and kindness have meant to us. She has made adjustments for him and gives him what he needs to feel comfortable, while still encouraging him to succeed. She knows how to build his confidence when he needs it and when to give him space for his emotions. She took it upon herself to learn how she could best help him in class and figured out what works best to support him throughout his day. She takes interest in the things he enjoys and connects with him in a way that keeps him engaged and excited about learning. I know managing an entire classroom is challenging enough without additional concerns, but she handles it wonderfully and has never once made us feel like he is a burden. He feels safe with her, and she is constantly communicating with me about his day, ways we can continue to support him, and words of encouragement. Sending your child to school when they are struggling is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but Mrs. Taylor truly eases my mind because I know she genuinely cares about him and will make sure he is in good hands. I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher for his fourth grade year, and we are so grateful for her.”

Beyond the classroom, Laura proudly supports local athletics and values every opportunity to encourage Franklin County students. She is also a dedicated volunteer with the Franklin County 4-H Association and serves as a member of the FC Extension Board. Her connection to the agricultural community includes membership in the FC Cattleman’s Association and Indiana Farm Bureau. In addition, she is a member of the Drewersburg Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Outside of school, Laura enjoys spending time on the family farm with her husband, Gregg, and their daughter, Lydia. Together, they enjoy making memories both at home and while traveling. Laura especially enjoys photography and scrapbooking, which allow her to preserve special moments from their adventures. One of her favorite places to be is at the beach, where she enjoys searching for sea glass along the shore.

Laura also enjoys cheering on Franklin County teams, especially while watching Lydia compete in high school soccer and track. She is a passionate fan of Indiana Hoosiers football and basketball, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
When asked about the most rewarding part of her job, Mrs. Taylor shared: “After 33 years of teaching in the same fourth grade classroom — at the very school where I attended from kindergarten through sixth grade — the best part of my job is still the daily connections I make with children. Fourth grade is the best grade: students are young enough to be excited by new discoveries, yet mature enough to have thoughtful conversations about the world around them. My favorite subjects to teach are reading and Indiana history. The best part of each day is the 15–20 minutes I protect for read-aloud time. During that time, we slow down, put away technology, forget about quizzes, and simply enjoy a story together. Whether it is a brand-new children’s novel or a classic written a hundred years ago, I love watching students become completely immersed in another place, another time, and another perspective. Some of the most rewarding moments come when a student connects something they are reading independently to what we are learning in class. I also treasure the humor and laughter that fill our classroom each day, the opportunity to learn about my students’ hobbies and families, and the relationships that grow throughout the school year. One of the greatest compliments is being asked to teach the child of a former student. I have been fortunate to work under four wonderful principals, but the friendships and teamwork of my fourth and fifth grade hallway coworkers have truly carried me through the highs and lows of education. After all these years, I still believe we are all Educators of the Month every day.”

Congratulations, Mrs. Taylor, and thank you for your dedication to Franklin County students, families, and the entire FCCSC community!
