March Educator of the Month

College and Career Readiness Coordinator, Mrs. Sara Shaver, has been named as March’s “Educator of the Month”. This honor comes on the heels of Ms. Shaver being recognized as an ISTAR Educator earlier this month.

This is Mrs. Shaver’s second year serving as Franklin County High School’s first College and Career Readiness Counselor.  Mrs. Shaver is a graduate of Franklin County High School.  She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Northern Kentucky University and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Indiana Tech.   Prior to returning to Franklin County Mrs. Shaver worked in higher education both at Brown Mackie College and Cincinnati State.

Mrs. Shaver was nominated for this recognition by a FCHS student.  According to the student, “Being Franklin County High School’s College and Career Readiness Coordinator means Mrs. Shaver supervises and helps students decide their next steps after high school and prepares them for what the real world has to offer.  Her door is always open to students who have transferred, are midterm graduates, and even to students who have already graduated.”  She provides support and guidance to both students and their parents as they navigate the waters of college admission, scholarships, and financial aid.

When asked about the best part of her job, Mrs. Shaver responded, “The best part of my job is seeing the students realize their full potential in whatever path they decide to take, helping them to recognize that it is feasible.  This job is very rewarding and the students are very appreciative that someone will sit down with them and help them with their postsecondary goals.  Life after high school can be very scary, and I love being the one to assist students with this part of their life.”

When not providing support for her students, or conducting a FASFA workshop for parents, Mrs. Shaver enjoys spending time with her family and keeping up with her five year old son.  She also enjoys being outside, likes spending time at the beach, and loves to read.

The purpose of the “Educator of the Month” program is to recognize outstanding Franklin County educators who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, leadership in the school, dedication to the students, and involvement in the community.  Nomination forms for “Educator of the Month” can be found on the school corporation website at www.fccsc.k12.in.us.
