Mrs. Christy Sheehan – Educator of the Month for December 2021

Superintendent, Ms. Tammy Chavis, is thrilled to announce that Mrs. Christy Sheehan, special education teacher at Laurel Elementary School, has been selected as December’s “Educator of the Month.”

Mrs. Sheehan is in her twenty eighth year of teaching for Franklin County Community Schools. Mrs. Sheehan received a Bachelor’s Degree in both Mild Disabilities and Severe Disabilities from Ball State University.

Mrs. Sheehan was nominated for this honor by a student at Franklin County Middle School. When asked why Mrs. Sheehan should be considered for this recognition, the student responded, “Christy Sheehan is an amazing person in and out of school. I have already moved out of the elementary that she works at and still to this day, she will ask how I am doing. If I am having trouble with homework, she will help even if it is after school hours. She is an all around amazing teacher!”

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Mrs. Sheehan is very involved with her church where she is the worship committee chairperson, song leader, and part of the ladies bible study group. Christy is also a volunteer mentor for an organization called M.o.R.E. for Kids (Mentors of Rush County Empowering Youth).

When not at school, Christy enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She loves going on adventures with her husband and their two young adult sons. This includes attending sporting events, concerts, traveling to new places, and so much more!

When asked what she loves most about her job, Mrs. Sheehan responded, “The best part of my job is helping students learn something new and seeing that look on their face when they’ve accomplished something hard whether that’s a math problem, reading a difficult text, or making better choices when it comes to their behavior. When I can help them feel better about themselves, that makes me feel happy and feel successful as their teacher. Another great part of my job is being a part of the Laurel School staff. They are all awesome teachers! They have such caring and compassionate hearts for their students, and it’s an honor and blessing to teach alongside them every day!”

The purpose of the “Educator of the Month” program is to recognize outstanding Franklin County educators who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, leadership in the school, dedication to the students, and involvement in the community.
