July 2020 Educator of the Month

After a brief pause in the “Educator of the Month” recognition program, Superintendent, Dr. Debbie Howell, is delighted to honor retiring teacher, Mrs. Diane Slaven as July’s “Educator of the Month”.  According to Howell, “Mrs. Slaven has earned this tribute because of her dedication to the profession, devotion to FCHS, and the memorable opportunities she has created for students.

Mrs. Slaven has been teaching in the Franklin County School Corporation for twenty-four years. Mrs. Slaven received her Bachelor Degree from Miami University then went on to obtain a Master’s Degree from Northern Kentucky University.

Mrs. Slaven was nominated for this honor by a student.  When asked why Mrs. Slaven should be considered for this recognition, the student responded, “Mrs. Slaven motivates us [LifeSmarts Team] to be the best we can be through the organization. Last year, I received a scholarship through LifeSmarts, and that is due to Mrs. Slaven pushing my team and me to do our very best. I am very appreciative of her and all that she does.”  A colleague writes, “Mrs. Slaven has been a role model for students for many years. She has worked hard to be the best teacher, and co-worker that she could be.”

Mrs. Slaven has been involved in many activities and organizations while teaching at Franklin County High School. Some include, LifeSmarts Coach for seventeen years, chairing Career Day, Chairman Membership Committee FCEA, Business Department Chair, and many more. Mrs. Slaven has also received the LifeSmart Coaches Award for 2020 along with FCHS National Honor Society Honorary Inductee 2020.

When asked what she loves most about her job, Mrs. Slaven replied, “The best part of teaching is making  lifelong impressions on students and memories they will never forget.” She also responded, “I love giving my students different opportunities that they may not have had in their personal lives.” Students often credit Mrs. Slaven for giving them the opportunity to see the “world” by taking them to California and Florida when traveling with the LifeSmarts team.

The purpose of the “Educator of the Month” program is to recognize outstanding Franklin County educators who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, leadership in the school, dedication to the students, and involvement in the community.  Nomination forms for “Educator of the Month” can be found on the school corporation website at www.fccsc.k12.in.us.
