My name is Shannon New and I am the principal of Laurel Elementary.
This is my 26th year in education. I graduated from Ball State University with a dual major in elementary and special education. I spent the first six years of my career teaching special education before moving into regular education. While teaching, I returned to Indiana Wesleyan University where I got my Masters in Education. After teaching fourth, second, first, and third grades, I enrolled at Western Governors University where I earned my licensure in Educational Leadership. Prior to coming to Laurel, I had experience as a Curriculum Director and Principal.
Children and education are truly my passion. Since I have been at LES, I have had the great pleasure of getting to know your children. I would like to get to know you as well. I believe that in order for a child to get a well rounded education it takes parents, students, and staff working together.
First and foremost, my door is always open. If you have any questions, concerns, ideas, or celebrations that you would like to share with me, please feel free to reach out at any time. My contact information is at the bottom of this letter. My main focus throughout the school day is your child, but I will get back to you as soon as possible.
I have spent the last two years building trust with the students, staff, and families. I have taken the time to not only get to know them, but to listen, talk, and spend time together. As we tackle the future together, it is my goal to strengthen relationships within the school environment. I will focus on increasing communication and sharing our successes and struggles. This commitment goes both ways. If parents have concerns, they have to contact me. I can not correct issues if I am not aware of them.
I am excited for the 2023-2024 school year. Together we will accomplish great things.
